FUNKY SIGNS

Funky Signs: Loreto, Baja – Cactus or Beer?

Text & photo © Milli Thornton.

I refuse to go behind the bars at this storefront in Loreto, Baja California, and find out they sell the usual Tecate beer and maybe some bottled agua.

I propose this is merely an edifice. In my happy imagination, you walk through the door and it opens into a flowering cactus garden that stretches to the horizon, with the Sea of Cortez shimmering to the east.

Refreshments are nectar from the cactus flowers and El Rey tacos with your choice of 12 condiments, including cucumbers and radishes. There’s an Eagles’ song wafting on a cool sea breeze. And it’s air-conditioned!

Come to Loreto in Baja Sur and you will understand the nuances of my fantasy.
